Only the 2nd time I've ever seen one of these guys, although I've heard him in our woods several times. Pounding some big holes in the crabapple. Tried to talk him into pounding on the other side so I could get a clear shot, but he took off. He is one big funky-looking bird!

That is so cool. I have yet to see one. And there he is is right in your backyard. That really makes birding easy.
